About Carmel Valley
Carmel Valley is a small suburban neighborhood in North County, San Diego. Known as North West City until the 1990s, when it was renamed Carmel Valley in honor of the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy who established a religious community and dairy farm in the area back in 1905, this master-planned community is one of San Diego’s newer neighborhoods. Many families and young professionals call this community home, and its close proximity to freeways makes it a convenient stop. The area is bordered by Sorrento Valley to the south, Del Mar to the west, Mira Mesa to the east, and Rancho Santa Fe to the north.
The main hub of Carmel Valley lies along Carmel Country Road. The area is mainly residential, although visitors will find a variety of small shops, restaurants, cafes, and local neighborhood parks to stop by. There are quite a few recreational activities here, including several hiking trails and open space parks. Nearby Carmel Mountain Reserve boasts several miles of hiking trails through ridges and canyons, and the ability to bike or horseback ride through nature with views of the surrounding areas.
