Surgical Periodontal Treatments
Surgical Periodontal Treatments
Dr. Alireza Khansari MSD only recommends surgery when necessary. If initial steps aren’t successful, we may recommend surgery to help get your teeth and gums back to health.
It’s important to realize gum disease doesn’t just affect your teeth and gums. It can release bacteria into your bloodstream that can negatively impact other parts of your body. That’s why we are committed to offering services that will prevent this from happening.
When to Seek Professional Treatment
Once periodontal disease hits the next stage, periodontitis, it’s critical to look into professional treatment. At this more serious stage, gums actually pull away from teeth and gum tissue begins to be destroyed. If this isn’t taken care of, bone and teeth can be lost. With periodontal help, though, you can make sure your gums are treated and teeth get back to being healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Surgical Periodontal Treatments
What happens in a pocket procedure?
During a pocket reduction procedure, a periodontist folds back the gum tissue in order to get access to the plaque, tartar and bacteria that’s hard to reach and may be causing the disease. If needed, damaged bone will be smoothed. Why? It makes it much easier for gum tissue to reattach to a nice, healthy bone. Once it’s reattached, the gum tissue is secured to that healthy bone with sutures.
Why is a pocket reduction procedure needed?
Bacteria, plaque and tartar can gather in deep places and start causing periodontal disease in your gums, teeth and surrounding areas. This is a serious disease that starts as gingivitis and progresses to something more serious. This disease may be prevented before it starts by having pocket reduction procedure, which cleans the disease-causing plaque, tartar, etc. Plus, it can help you maintain a healthy smile and your natural teeth.

What are regenerative procedures?
Our team at Poway Perio offers regenerative procedures, also known as bone grafting and guided tissue regeneration.
If there’s a defect in a bone, there’s a simple way we can try and fix it: a bone graft stimulates the formation of new bone. By combining both natural and synthetic bone material, we can create this bone regeneration. To prevent gum tissue from getting between the tooth and bone, we sometimes use special membranes to ensure a more successful regeneration of bone and periodontal ligament.
As this is probably a fairly unfamiliar procedure to most people, we are happy to answer all questions and walk you through the process, step-by-step.
